Hi Beauties!

Well, I’ve been coveting a beauty must-have for a while. I’m sure a lot of you have heard of the “Z” Palette, or seen similar items which are basically empty magnetized palettes designed to hold your de-potted eyeshadows, powders, blushes etc.

The Z Palette Pro: click on image to purchase

I have to say part of my inspiration for wanting one was because I decided to de-pot my M.A.C shadows and visit my local counter for a free lippie on the Back2Mac program.

However I just couldn’t justify shelling out $30 + for this particular item (why not just pay $36 for the lipstick?), and frankly, waiting for it to ship from heaven knows where takes far too long… so – I decided to get crafty.

And of course. Sharing is caring, so here are my instructions for a D.I.Y “Z” Palette. It turned out pretty well I think!

Here she is:

20130124-115609.jpg

I adore this, it hasn’t left my bathroom counter since I made it. It’s so neat to have all your fave colours in one personally designed palette! Hoorah for such a wonderful idea! If you’ve never thought about doing this with your single eyeshadows, blushes, facepowders etc before, go for it, it will change your makeup life!

Now, to make your own (life-altering) palette. Here is what you need:

20130124-120500.jpg

 * A book that is the size of the palette you want to make. (normally I NEVER advocate ruining books for craft (since you know, books are SPECIAL!!). But since this one was only three dollars and about motorbikes I decided to make an exception!)

* Foam board – At least as much as the book x 2 (I found this as packaging in a box – but you can pick this stuff up from officeworks etc).

* Scissors or a stanley knife, for cutting said book and board.

* Black duct tape

* Flat metal washers (at hardware stores for a few dollars)

* Double sided tape (not pictured)

* Magnetic paper/strips – this is probably the hardest “ingredient” to find. You can buy it in packs from office stores (see the officeworks version here) or you can just use whatever you can find around the house.

I used one of those magnetized calenders that gets put in your mail box from the local real estate, and just cut it to fit. You could also use magnet pieces or strips (like these), as long as you have enough to fill the base of your palette.

INSTRUCTIONS:20130124-115700.jpg

Grab your trusty book and open it out so you can see where the pages and the spine meet. Grab your knife or scissors (be careful!) and cut around all the inner pages and remove, so you’re left with the “shell” of the book. It should look like the picture below.

20130124-115707.jpgNow take your book and lay it on the foam board to measure how much you will need. You need two pieces of foam board for the inner “buffers” of the palette, so lay the book out and draw around it on the foam to get the right size, then cut the pieces of foam out with your stanley knife.20130124-115714.jpg 20130124-115756.jpg

Then, leaving an inch or two around the edge, draw and then cut another square out in the centre of one of the foam board pieces. 20130124-115801.jpg

I just did this free hand, but you could use a ruler to get it all perfect if you like! This will be the edge of your palette.

Before sticking in your foam board you will want to add your ‘magnetic’ magic into the base of the palette (the section/side where you won’t have a full sheet of foam stuck in) If you are using magnetic sheets, measure and cut the sheet to size and secure with double sided tape. As I just used scrap of magnet I had at home, I cut and blended pieces to fill the space.

Now, using the double sided tape, secure the foam board pieces inside the book ‘shell’ like the picture below (the black part is where you’ve stuck the magnet sheet):

20130124-115727.jpg

Finally, you want to take your duct tape and cover the ENTIRE palette/book – front and back. Just coat the whole thing with strips of the tape. I did a couple of layers and overlapped the pieces to make things nice and secure and finished off. Press the tape into the ridges and grooves of the palette to make it nice and neat. This gives it a strong surface that can be wiped over later and makes the whole thing look cohesive.

20130124-115733.jpg20130124-115634.jpg

Now, you just need to take your depotted shadows and put them in! 20130124-115601.jpg

Metal pans will adhere magnetically without a problem. Most of mine did, however, aluminium pans like the MAC ones need a metal element adhered to the bottom to make them stick. I just used washers from the hardware store and glued them to the base of the pot before placing in the palette, you can place the sticker from the back of the product over the washer after securing it and they will still magnetize to the palette base (plus its a nice way to keep track of your colours):20130124-115553.jpg

20130124-115541.jpg

You can also do as I’ve done below and place the stickers from the product on the inner lid of the palette so you know what you’ve got hanging out in there! 20130124-115644.jpg

So beauties, there you have it, a do it yourself Z palette, for a fraction of the cost! I think it’s pretty ‘crafty’ if I do say so myself :)

It may be freezingly obvious that it’s winter outside, but that doesn’t mean it can’t be springtime in your purse or pocket with the darling new Marc Jacobs Daisy and Daisy Eau So Fresh perfume mini bottles that are shaped so sweetly in flower cases.

I love the original Daisy perfume and it has been a staple on my perfume table since it was released some time ago. The Eu So Fresh version is nice too, but a little more fruity and less like a freshly picked bouquet.

I love how strong and long lasting Daisy is too, and instantly recognisable, I often have people comment when I wear it that they ‘know’ the scent, and some even ‘pick it’ (excuse the pun) by name.

These little purse packs are limited edition, and contain a decent 20mls worth of fragrance, you’d be surprised how long this would last with a scent like Daisy, you need so little. I think I’ve had a 30ml bottle for quite a few months now and it’s only just starting to empty out.

Best of all, these springtime beauties are only $35 each, or $55 if you splurge on the set of two! The perfect gift or a little treat for yourself to warm up your winter day.

They’re available at department stores and pharmacies now. I can’t wait to get my hands on one, with this miserable weather, I need a little flower pick me up!

I love Katy Perry.

She always looks to me like some kind of neon Barbie doll with her long lashes and pop art coloured tresses. Her outfits and beauty choices are fun and young, and she’s never afraid to break a few rules. I just can’t get enough of her looks. She’s kind of a larger than life character, part screen siren, part cartoon character, and it’s so enjoyable to check out her colourful red carpet style. I wish there were more celebrities who embraced such a joyful and colourful aesthetic.

She was rocking a brilliant blue do’ at the Nickelodeon Kid’s Choice awards this year, her long flowy ponytail and green outfit made her look like a cross between a My Little Pony and a Ninja Turtle! No wonder the kiddies love her!

Now she’s putting her name to some of the hottest products on the market. Eyelure have brought her in to do a gorgeous range of false eyelashes (available at Priceline) with cutesy names like ‘Oh Honey’ and ‘Sweetie Pie’ – what’s not to love? She’s also released a second perfume to continue the success of her ‘Purr’ fragrance. The new ‘Meow’ scent keeps with the kitty theme and is bottled in a similar cat like container, only this time it’s pink, not purple. I haven’t tried this fragrance yet, but stay tuned. It’s meant to be a sister fragrance to Purrm just a little bit sweeter where Purr is fruity. I’m dying to get my paws on a bottle!

I do love the Purr scent though, it’s been my go-to daily perfume for a while now. It’s a parfum so it has great lasting power, and the fruity, fun scent just cheers me up – especially as the winter months start to bring on darkened days! If you follow me on Twitter you may have seen me crowing about my purchase of an awesome priced Purr gift pack recently (there are some great packs in store right now for mother’s day). You can never have too much of a good thing I say, and how cute is this? I even got a kitty shaped solid perfume necklace with it, and I think it retailed for somewhere in the vicinity of $50 (Plus i got it at Priceline with a rewards voucher, woo hoo!). For a 100ml parfum, shower gel and moisturiser, this was a total steal! I think I paid about $70 for the 50ml Purr parfum alone when it first came out!

Finally Katy is also lending her name to GHD stylers and the new ghd hair dryer, the GHD Air. In the awesome ads for the dryer she’s dressed as a mermaid, with, in true Katy style, PINK hair of course! How cool is this ad? A true visual feast!  I hope this splash of colour has helped to brighten your afternoon beauties. Tell me, do you love or loathe Katy? What do you think of her style? Maybe I’m just girl crushing on her because she’s a fellow cat lover…who knows!

It’s that time again ladies when we look at a trusty beauty box subscription service and ‘unpack’ (pardon the pun!) their latest offering.
This time it is the coveted BellaBox and their March slew of surprises, coyly titled “get naked with BellaBox.”

While the “box” did come in a box, the March collection of products was neatly wrapped up in this cute calico sack:

Inside was a plethora of prettiness for those of you that are  ‘nature’ inclined, here is what the accompaniment card and the selection of goodies looked like:

Missing from my pic below however is the divine Bellamer Eye Balm which had been lost somewhere in my bathroom as soon as I opened the pack, sorry girls! It is lovely though FYI!

The March BellaBox contained a good mix of products to help you get and maintain a beautiful barefaced beauty look. Starting, strangely enough, with an EyeLift kit sample. I haven’t tried this one yet but it looks interesting, I’m saving it for a day when I’m looking particularly tired after the perils of a PhD study sesh…I anticipate that day will come pretty soon! These are teensy pods of liquid, (you only need a small bit of one for your eye area apparently) which will make fine lines and uglies dissapear. Sounds awesome!

Beyond the eyelift-in-a-pod, there were some other nice goodies in the box/bag including a small purse sized tube of Pure Fiji body lotion (sigh, this stuff truly is AH-MAAAAAZING! If you’ve never smelt anything by Pure Fiji, get on it, you’ll be hooked) I’ve been using their shower gel and soap when I can afford it, and as with their other products, the hydrating body lotion sample in the BellaBox doesn’t dissapoint.

Another highlight of the box was the full size Yes To Carrots Lip Tint. The shade is very very sheer, but it’s lovely and glimmery and moisturising and reminds me of a Burt’s Bees product of a similar nature that I’ve been hooked on for a while.

Here is how my lips looked before and after application of the Yes To Carrots Natural Smile Lip Tint:

I’m not sure if you can even notice the difference, but the tint just added a little bit of warmth and sheen to my lips, perfect for every day wear, and the product is also 95% organic, which is always nice when it’s something you’re likely to ingest at some stage (in tiny amounts of course!). It was also really conditioning and soothed my lips which have a tendency to be quite dry.

All in all I was pretty happy with the March BellaBox. There wasn’t a huge number of products, but as is known about BellaBox, the quality of brands included where quite high. I’m looking forward to trying the hair mask from Aussie brand U Little Beauty that also came in the box.

Finally, it had a snack in it too! What more could you ask for? Beauty, and brunch! I had to resist the urge to munch on the museli biscuit from Carman’s when I was photographing.

Num num!

What do you think beauties, is BellaBox a good buy at $15 per month? I think this service could be something I will look into subscribing to long term. Their box for April looks awesome ( it is called Around the World in Fashion) and is highlighting some uber-brands like DKNY and Benefit. Bring it on!

You can check BellaBox out here, or for more info on the service email info@bellabox.com.au

I LOVE scented candles! Seriously, there is something about that romantic flicker and scented air that just makes my stress melt away at the end of a long day of researching and writing.
