Having spent half the morning running around my university campus looking for anything resembling coconut water, I thought I’d better post on my newest addiction.

When I was in the states last year coconut water was everywhere, in particular there were these huge ads on every corner of NYC featuring Rhianna slurping away. But as someone who hates coconut (this includes the smell, the milk, the flavour etc) I didn’t bother trying it. However a few months ago I became curious, so I bought a bottled version from the supermarket, and ewww…it was so hideously tasting I tossed it. (I realized later it had been sweetened with Stevia, ick!), not for me.

But recently I was sent some of a  product which goes by the simple name of “C” Coconut Water. I was brave, and after chilling it in the fridge, cracked open one of the bright green tetrapacks and took a big sip.

It was, well…yummo! I couldn’t believe it. What was that awful fluid I had come to understand as coconut water before? It was nothing like this. This REAL coconut water was refreshing, mild and not overwhelmingly coconutty. It was organic and 100% natural, and it was great! C Coconut water is a uniquely flavoured drink and I’d never tried anything like it before, it has a kind of earthy taste, which might not be for everyone, but I was hooked.

This magic ‘water’ is basically the liquid straight from the centre of young green coconuts. Not the milk you might equate with coconuts, which is made from the ‘meat’ of the fruit. The older the coconut, the sweeter the water or juice inside becomes, so when the water is taken from the youngin’ it doesn’t have a hugely overpowering taste it’s just refreshing and super good for you. It has a greenish slightly opaque colour that looks like this:

Now you may not be convinced, why not just drink regular water? Well, for one thing, coconut water is yummier! It’s no replacement for H20 but it’s a great alternative to sports drinks or soda, which are full of rubbish your body doesn’t need.

Coconut Water also has some additional health (and beauty) benefits that might entice you, especially as Winter draws closer. It’s a natural liquid that boosts your immune system and improves circulation. It will give you a nice internal detox and keep icky winter viruses at bay, naturally. Other elements help to reduce stress and promote clear skin. That means beauty from the inside – out.

It also has more potassium than a banana. Potassium is great after a workout as your muscles lose it when you’re in action and sweating. Potassium is also helpful in decreasing blood pressure and it’s involved in nerve function, muscle control and blood pressure. Basically, you need it! What’s the final good point? It’s not high in calories, and is super low in fat. One 330ml serve of C Coconut waters only packs 327 kilojoules, that’s a tiny 78 calories.

The trick with coconut water (which I’ve learnt the hard way) is that this stuff has to be as fresh as can be to taste any good. That means anything processed, sweetened or bottled in plastic is out. Look for tetra-packs (They kind of look like juice boxes) and I’d recommend only trying the organic and 100% pure varieties – the lovely bright green boxes by C are hard to miss!

You also MUST drink this cold. Otherwise, ick. Even in winter, it won’t have that refreshing taste if you knock it back at room temp. Here’s how I enjoyed mine, chilled, and over ice! mmmmm…

You can get C Coconut Water at Harris Farm supermarkets, and some cafes’ – check the website for your local stockist. They also sell cartons of coconutty goodness on their website, which go for $33.60 for a dozen 330ml serves, including delivery.

What do you think beauties, coconut water – hit or miss?

I love Katy Perry.

She always looks to me like some kind of neon Barbie doll with her long lashes and pop art coloured tresses. Her outfits and beauty choices are fun and young, and she’s never afraid to break a few rules. I just can’t get enough of her looks. She’s kind of a larger than life character, part screen siren, part cartoon character, and it’s so enjoyable to check out her colourful red carpet style. I wish there were more celebrities who embraced such a joyful and colourful aesthetic.

She was rocking a brilliant blue do’ at the Nickelodeon Kid’s Choice awards this year, her long flowy ponytail and green outfit made her look like a cross between a My Little Pony and a Ninja Turtle! No wonder the kiddies love her!

Now she’s putting her name to some of the hottest products on the market. Eyelure have brought her in to do a gorgeous range of false eyelashes (available at Priceline) with cutesy names like ‘Oh Honey’ and ‘Sweetie Pie’ – what’s not to love? She’s also released a second perfume to continue the success of her ‘Purr’ fragrance. The new ‘Meow’ scent keeps with the kitty theme and is bottled in a similar cat like container, only this time it’s pink, not purple. I haven’t tried this fragrance yet, but stay tuned. It’s meant to be a sister fragrance to Purrm just a little bit sweeter where Purr is fruity. I’m dying to get my paws on a bottle!

I do love the Purr scent though, it’s been my go-to daily perfume for a while now. It’s a parfum so it has great lasting power, and the fruity, fun scent just cheers me up – especially as the winter months start to bring on darkened days! If you follow me on Twitter you may have seen me crowing about my purchase of an awesome priced Purr gift pack recently (there are some great packs in store right now for mother’s day). You can never have too much of a good thing I say, and how cute is this? I even got a kitty shaped solid perfume necklace with it, and I think it retailed for somewhere in the vicinity of $50 (Plus i got it at Priceline with a rewards voucher, woo hoo!). For a 100ml parfum, shower gel and moisturiser, this was a total steal! I think I paid about $70 for the 50ml Purr parfum alone when it first came out!

Finally Katy is also lending her name to GHD stylers and the new ghd hair dryer, the GHD Air. In the awesome ads for the dryer she’s dressed as a mermaid, with, in true Katy style, PINK hair of course! How cool is this ad? A true visual feast!  I hope this splash of colour has helped to brighten your afternoon beauties. Tell me, do you love or loathe Katy? What do you think of her style? Maybe I’m just girl crushing on her because she’s a fellow cat lover…who knows!

On Thursday at MBFWA…

Roopa Pemmaraju’s show was vibrant and exciting, the hairstyles were simple, but completely effective for the look they were showing. Sleek ponytails, with added texture in the form of a tightly woven braid across one section of the hair made the look fresh and modern.

The ponytails were wrapped too at the base, some with braids, and others with strands of straight hair. Love it! And…best of all, the look was totally wearable!

Also on Thursday, at We are Handsome: The much anticipated swimwear label’s collection was offset by 40′s style pinup waves, basically curls from the middle of the hair down, that had been brushed out for a relaxed look. Falling from a deep side part, the style was accentuated with brightly coloured bobby pins. Check out the lipstick too! MAC used two different colours for the top and bottom lips, interesting look, would you try it? The bobby pins they added to the hair actually matched the colours in the lipsticks!

Finally the Tovah show which was part of the ‘New Generation’ show at MBFWA offered some unique hair trends I was quite fond of, Brisbane native Tovah Cottle showcased a fresh colour palette of looks with some billowy and sleek cuts in her designs.

The hair didn’t look OVER done like it did at some other shows this week, it was big hair though, which we love! So full of body – and brushed forward over one shoulder. Some of the looks featured custom made visors to match, but the hair looked just as nice alone. Here is Tovah (left) with one of her ‘big-haired’ models at the show:

On Friday…

The Raffles Designer showcase offered much in the way of style inspiration on Friday morning, with collections by Winson Tan, Crystal Tsoi, Ayaka Ichikawa, and Gabriel Lee sparkling down the runway.

I really enjoyed this show, the fashion, the hair, and the makeup were just divine for each of the designers. The hairstyles

were simple but really lovely across all the looks. They featured long sleek hair, ironed pin straight. Some of the looks had this hair accentuated with elaborate head-dresses and hair bands, while for others the hair was just sleek and flat, flowing chicly as the models strutted their stuff.

Ponytails were hot on the Raffles catwalk too, with sleek extra long straight ponies extending from the centre back of the

head and wrapped with leather or black fabric creating an almost futuristic vibe for these modern collections.

Finally, rounding out a huge week for me, Akira’s show had plenty of ethereal magic and bright colours. The hair was put up in a few different styles, JonPulitano for Redken created some twist and pin styles, others were a little slicker with high ponytails curled under into buns or lower ponytails looped around for an almost chignon look. Like the collection, the hair showed diversity, but still maintained Akira’s classic aesthetic elegance.

So what do you think beauties, anything here inspire you?

There was plenty to see during the MBFWA week that was, but my tired feet are kind of happy it’s over! Now… on to the fun part – recreating my favourite MBFWA looks for you guys in hair tutorials… Stay tuned!!

Two more full days at MBFWA, Tuesday and Wednesday saw shows by a plethora of designers, highlights included Zimmerman, Jayson Brunsdon, & Talulah on Tuesday and Lisa Ho on Wednesday. Zimmerman had the most beautiful colour palette at their off-site morning show, with lots of rainbow pastels lighting up the runway. They combined this with interesting silhouettes Continue reading…
